Ebenezer Bourne Kane Gurney was a pillar of his community. He wrote “The History of Hanson” for a book on the history of Plymouth County. Born in 1808 in Abington, Massachusetts, Ebenezer was born into a musical family. His father Thomas Gurney was a composer. He wrote music for all brass bands. Ebenezer was a musician. One of the instruments he played was the bugle.
Ebenezer settled in Hanson early in his life. There he married his sweetheart Almira J. Josselyn. Together they had a large family of 11 children. Only 7 children lived to see adulthood.
Ebenezer had the distinguished honor of becoming the conductor of the first all brass band in the United States. He died at the age of 78 years old in 1887 in Hanson.
