Canadian Research Tips

Research in Canada is dynamic. As you know, I like to do genealogy on the cheap. So, I scour the internet for databases that are free or cost effective.

There are two websites I immediately go to for genealogical research in Canada.

Family Search has 84 databases for Canada. Now mind you, not all the databases are complete. Their largest databases include:

  • Canadian census records from 1851 to 1911

  • Province census records

  • Canadian Passenger Lists from 1881 to 1922

  • Ontario tax, death, and marriage records

Also, there are various smaller databases to check out. FamilySearch is a good place to start with your Canadian genealogical research.

The Canadian government, as far as genealogical research is concerned, has their act together. They provide tips on genealogical research and they have easy to find links to their databases. Their site is user friendly.

The Canadian government site categorizes their databases into:

  • Births, deaths, and marriages

  • Census and enumerations

  • Immigration and Citizenship

  •  Land

  •  Military

  •  People

Their databases available to the public are quite impressive. If that wasn’t enough, they provide links to other databases such as the Canadian archives and their library.

I hope the websites above help you along your genealogical journey in Canada. Happy Digging!
