Rasors of Carter Tennessee

Here is the Rasor family. Taken about 1895 in Carter County Tennessee, the family had lived in the area for several generations. Standing (left to right) are Julia Rasor who is about 14 years old and her mother Amanda Sheffield. Sitting is (left to right) William Rasor, an unknown boy, Ruben Rasor (the father) and an unknown girl. If you look closely the boy in the middle is wearing a USA pin on the right side of his jacket.

The Rasor family had lived in Carter County, Tennessee since just after the War of 1812. Peter Rasor, who was Reuben’s (pictured) grandfather fought in that war and then settled down in the Little Doe Settlement.

What I like about this photograph is the clothing. It is not what you envision when you think of late Victorian attire. Their clothes are practical for life in the mountains. It gives another perspective of fashion during the era. And I love the huge bow in Julia’s hair!
